Anyone know when judges will start looking at law school grad applicants (who aren't bound by the hiring plan) for the 2009-10 term?

Some have already started. Typical, however, is around May/June.

Has anyone heard from the judges who are already accepting apps for the 09-10 term? (Kleinfeld, Smith)."
Via Law Clerk Addict 2009:
"Fisher: Yale"

Silverman: William & Mary '08 Grad
Smith has hired a UCLA grad.
Will Smith really not look at anyone without Law Review? Does he realize at some schools Law Review is not solely merit based, but has diversity components?
Any word on McKeown? I hear she is very smart and great to work for.
McKeown hired at least 1 09-10 last year (Columbia 08)
Does anyone know if Judge Rawlinson has hired for the 2008-2009 term?
McKeown also hired a Chicago '08 grad for 09-10.
Kozinski is looking
What credentials do you need for Koz? Would top 15% at a T14 be wasting their time?
Kozinski's currently has a clerk from a T-14 school, and he was #2 in his class. Still doesn't hurt to try if you think you've got something that will get his attention.
You'd probably have to be in the 10 people in your class to be worth a look, honestly. It costs you nothing to inquire.
Anyone know how many Koz usually interviews before he finishes hiring?
How long after I apply to Koz should I wait before I might get an interview (or when I should assume I won't get one)?
Kozinski generally interviews in August. Even if you are from a T14 school, you better be in the top 3 (not 3%, but top 3). The current clerk spoken of was borderline as ranked #2 from Texas. In short, Kozinski only hires people good enough to clerk on the Supreme Court. I believe all of his current clerks (including the one from Texas) will be clerking for SCOTUS either in 08-09 or 09-10.
Yes, Kozinski's clerk Scott Keller (Texas 07)will clerk for Kennedy next term.
M. Smith may be reviewing L Rev now, no idea, but one of his clerks for 2006-07 was NYU, no L Rev, hired primarily on word of mouth from her district judge.
Received a very nicely worded rejection from M. Smith today.
I agree. M. Smith's rejection letter was the nicest I've ever received. The "best part/worst part" language was the first such comment that I thought sounded really genuine (and I'm not being sarcastic). Makes me even more disappointed I didn't get the job.
Well, applied to A-Koz (HYS, top 15 percent, non-LRev). I'm really just hoping for a real, live rejection letter rather than the painful, bitter silence that's more likely
Anyone know whether any of the Seattle judges have started hiring?
AK just hired a current law student from Chicago.
AK = Kozinski or Kleinfeld?
Koz
Anyone know how long judges usually take to consider grad apps? I know judges hire at different times, especially prior to September, but is there any commonality as to the length of time between submitting an app and getting called for an interview?
A couple of my (former) classmates and I sent in some 9th Circuit apps ~ 2-4 weeks ago and have not gotten any responses, aside from a rejection from M. Smith. I would be curious to know if anyone has been getting called for interviews.
I'm a grad, and I interviewed in late May with Silverman and Bybee. I already heard "no" from Silverman, but Bybee was still early in his process, and I haven't heard from him. Incidentally, I also got the rejection from M. Smith.
Koz - Also hired from Northwestern
are Koz's hires '08 grads?
Ikuta has hired one HLS.
At least one of Kozinski's is an 09 grad.
NU is '09.
Kozinski reaches out to people he is interested in. He is almost done hiring I heard.
Is Ikuta's HLS a grad or 09er?
Callahan and M. Smith are interviewing.
When did Callahan make calls? Is she one of those judges who looks for applicants who have a connection to her?
Anyone have info on Bea? Is he actively reviewing apps or waiting until later?
how about Pregerson? does he hire grads early?
I believe Pregerson is done for 09-10.
Callahan was calling the past couple of weeks. She prefers clerks with multiple years of work experience, prior clerkships, or both (as stated on OSCAR). No idea how important "connections" are to her.
Pregerson usually hires pretty late in the season.
Farris is sending out emails that he is reviewing applications.
Noonan is done.
Where did Noonan hire from?
No idea, but Noonan is sending email rejections to other applicants.
How do you know Noonan is done? Did the email rejection say that?
Noonan's OSCAR posting indicates that all the 09-10 slots are filled
Any news on McKeown? Given that she's already hired 2 (3?) it seems that she's actively looking.
Callahan has finished hiring for 2009.
Bybee hired a Chicago alum
Senior Judge Warren Ferguson just passed away. http://www.metnews.com/articles/2008/ferg062608.htm
erroneously posted on the eight circuit blog but Milan Smith is calling grads and interviewing the week of the 21st.
Milan Smith has been interviewing for weeks - he's also interviewing people this week (scheduled 7/1 and 7/2 interviews.)
Jay Bybee (Las Vegas) hired a Maryland Law student.
I think Koz has one spot left for 09-10.
Rymer is accepting/reviewing alum applications early, but probably won't be making calls for a few weeks to come.
Per chambers, Leavy has career clerks so he's not hiring anyone.
Per chambers today, Hall is done.
Any info on who Hall hired?
B. Fletcher's OSCAR profile says her '09-'10 spot is filled.
Per chambers, Trott is not hiring this year. He's cutting back on cases and has one clerk staying on for an extra year.
McKeown is done.
Kozinski is done. He hired a fourth (reputedly very sharp) clerk from Harvard.
Kleinfeld? Brrrrrrr.
Got a note from N.R. Smith today saying he's "not hiring at this time for the 2009-2010 term," but will keep my application "for future use." Not really sure whether that means that he's done or that he's not looking at applications yet.
Has anyone heard from Judge Paez or Alarcon?
Paez is reviewing alum applications with the 3Ls' in Sept. I haven't heard from Alarcon - applied mid-June.
5:43 - how do you know? His OSCAR listing says that he will make an effort to review and perhaps interview alums beforehand.
Alarcon is full for 2009, but sent out interview offers for 2010-11.
Fernandez is calling.
When did Alcaron send out interview offers? When will he be interviewing?
According to Law Clerk Addict 2009, Paez hired one Harvard Alum for '09-10. So it doesn't look like he's waiting.
FYI The Paez alum seems to have been hired before 5/1/08 (because that person appears in the HLS listing of 2009-10 clerks which hasn't been updated since then.) Not sure if that person was hired during the last hiring season, or whether Paez is actually moving right now.
Alarcon has been done all summer.
10:03 - what do you mean by Alarcon has been done all summer? Done for '09-10?
Yes; Alarcon finished for 09-10 awhile ago.
Has Fisher been interviewing?
Anyone know the status of Reinhardt's hiring? OSCAR says he's taking 3L apps now.
Tashima is calling.
Confirmed via call to chambers, Judge Alarcon is full for '09-10 and is not yet looking for '10-11.
Kozinski is reputed to be a great judge who works very hard -- clerking for him would be quite an experience!
Such an odd shtick, 11:54.
Fisher is interviewing.
What's up with Kleinfeld?
Bea just re-listed his OSCAR posting. Has anyone who previously applied to him heard anything?
I'm a grad who applied to Bea awhile ago. I haven't heard anything one way or the other.
What does brrr. mean after the reference to Judge Kleinfeld (I'm assuming not that Alaska is cold because that is obvious)?
M. Smith hired a Northwestern '08
I was told by a former clerk of Judge Schroeder that Judge Hawkins, at least in the past, has split the year between San Francisco and Phoenix and expected his clerks to be with him in each location. Has anyone else heard this? I tried calling chambers but no one was answering.
yes, that is correct about judge hawkins. he spends more like 9 months in phoenix and 3 or 4 in SF>
2:41 I can also confirm this (both his split and that he expects clerks to come with him.) Summer in SF, rest of the year in Phoenix.
So no one has heard anything about Reinhardt?
Does anyone have any news about Judge Wardlaw's hiring?
I've heard Reinhardt has already interviewed some candidates.
Silverman finished hiring for the 2009-10 term some time ago.
Reinhardt has been interviewing.
Does anyone know anything about Judge Clifton? Has he hired anyone?
Clifton just hired a Chicago alum.
Bea hired a grad from Golden Gate (Really!)
Wow, just wow. I give up.
Bea hired a Golden Gate student as an extern, not as a clerk.
I can confirm that the Bea/Golden Gate posting was erroneous on two counts: (1) student, not grad, and (2) (most critically) extern, not clerk.
Any word on Thomas interviews/hires?
Judge Reinhardt has hired three of his four clerks for 2009-2010 (Yale '09, UCLA '09, Columbia '09). The OSCAR posting is accurate; he does not follow the hiring plan and reviews applications from rising 3Ls over the summer.
Doesn't Reinhardt usually hire at least 1 from Harvard?
I was an extern for Bea this summer and can confirm the Golden Gate hire was for an externship, and made primarily because the person had a previous career as a vice-president of a major international corporation.
Judge Reinhardt has finished hiring for 2009-2010
Gould already hired one from Michigan; anyone know if he's done hiring for '09?
Graber and Wallace were calling this past week.
McKeown is hired through 2010.
Anyone know anything about Marsha Berzon?
Anyone know anything about Marsha Berzon?
Thomas is my dream judge. Does someone with top 15% grades at a top 10 school, on Law Review, have a shot?
I can't tell if his being in Montana makes him less desirable to applicants, or if everyone wants to work for him because he's such a great judge...
I know two people who've clerked for Thomas in the last 3 years, and your stats are competitive with theirs. From what I know about those who have clerked for Thomas, getting from "competitive" to "interview-worthy" and, eventually, "hired" requires more than just GPA/LR: one of the Thomas clerks I know was going on the teaching market and had already completed a prize-winning paper, and the other had done a significant amount of public interest work and was going to continue public interest work after the clerkship. Hope that helps.
Do must judges on the Ninth Circuit follow the plan - as in they don't call until 12 on Monday?
I interviewed with four Ninth Circuit judges earlier this Summer (I'm an alum), and three out of the four said they followed the plan for 3Ls, including the one-week reviewing period.
Judge Wardlaw's clerks are conducting screening interviews for 3Ls.
Anyone know if Judge Schroeder gives exploding offers?
Clifton is sending email invites to interview as of just after 9 AM PDT this morning.
people getting calls from whom so far?
3Ls obviously
Bybee and Rymer are calling.
Canby and Tashima are calling.
Hawkins called.
Any word on Seattle Judges?
Tallman called.
O'Scannlain is calling
Any news on Bay Area judges?
O'Scannlain has already hired 2 alums (YLS, UVA).
Fisher is full.
Wallace is done as of last Friday.
Berzon called this morning.
Has anyone heard from Graber?
Any word from Idaho/Washington/Arizona judges?
Any contact from Fletcher???
Re: Arizona, Silverman finished hiring awhile ago; Schroeder (gives exploding offers), Hawkins, and Canby (already interviewed a few grads) are calling.
Thanks for the info - Arizona judges are calling as in "already finished calling today" or "will be calling over the next couple of days"?
Any word on Paez?
Anyone here from Pregerson Thomas or D. Nelson?
Does anyone know what year(s) Alarcon is booked through? Definitely filled through 2009-2010, but through 2010-2011 as well?
Definitely appreciate it if anyone knows if Thomas or Kleinfeld have called/e-mailed
Anything from Beezer? When does he normally contact?
Thomas emailed/called this morning.
Bea called to set up interviews.
Pregerson called. Thomas e-mailed to set up interviews. Nelson called to set up interviews. Wardlaw called to set up interview. Anyone heard anything from Bea or W. Fletcher?
I can confirm that Bea definitely set up at least two interviews today.
Anyone here from N. Randy Smith?
*hear. It's bedtime.
Thomas, Rymer, Berzon, Tashima, Fisher, O'Scannlain, Bybee, and Ikuta all called 3Ls yesterday.
Graber filled her interview slots.
Anyone heard from Paez, Fletcher, Goodwin?
Paez has filled his interview slots.
Anyone heard from Judge Nelson?
D. Nelson is done.
Anybody know of 9th Circuit judges that don't participate in the scramble (i.e. have not yet called?)
Anyone heard from Kleinfeld? Is he even still hiring?
So is everyone done except for Kleinfeld?
I heard a rumor that Bea has finished. Can anyone confirm/deny?
4:32 - Rawlinson is a notoriously late caller (won't call for several months) and IIRC, Goodwin was going to interview late due to health issues (not quite sure about that). Also, Browning selects his single clerk (without interview) after the fall rush. Those are the only three that come to mind but I'm sure there are others.
Rawlinson doesn't even look at apps til the spring. I believe Browning is not even hiring 1 clerk this year.
Heard second-hand that Fletcher is interviewing Thur. For what it's worth, his class is cancelled that day.
I do not think that Kleinfeld follows the plan. He is disadvantaged being so far away. That said, I have no idea if he is done. I think he hired at least one already.
anyone hear from b. fletcher or gould (both in seattle)?
B. Fletcher has long been done for 09-10.
Judge Beezer has set up some interviews for next week.
i hear second-hand that Farris has called.
per Hall's chambers:
Thank you for submitting your application for a clerkship in my chambers. Unfortunately, your application arrived after the selection process was completed.
I wish you success in your law career.
Has anyone heard whether Hawkins has given out offers yet?
Any word on whether Thomas has given offers yet?
I believe Thomas has offered.
Judge Wardlaw has offered
Hawkins has offered.
Bea, Rymer, Paez, Tashima, Fletcher, Fisher, Graber, Clifton, Thomas, Berzon have all offered
Bea hired a 3L from Texas.
Anyone know if Graber is done?
Pregerson hired a 3L from Boalt.
any news on Goodwin?
Has anyone heard from Hug?
I have heard that Hug sometimes does not call applicants until later. Not sure about this application season though.
O'Scannlain is done.
What is the latest on Bybee?
Bybee already hired two grads, and the comments section of law clerk addict states that Bybee hired a Stanford 3L. I heard he offered a 2010-11 clerkship to someone, so my guess is Bybee is done. Pity -- Vegas, baby!
Kleinfeld is calling re interviews.
Kleinfeld started calling yesterday . . . and so did Thomas Nelson
Pregerson hired a 3L from Loyola.
Fernandez hired a 3L for 2010-11.
Canby is done.
Seattle: Judge Tallman started conducting interviews last weekend. Judge Gould hired a University of Washington 3L.
Tallman is done.
Gould is done
N. Smith is done.
Anyone know who Bybee's fourth was???
I heard Bybee hired a 3L from BYU.
So is anyone still looking?
I heard that Kleinfeld still has one spot left. He has made a few calls but is accepting applications.
Does Rawlinson really wait until Spring to call?
4:36- Yes.
What's the word on Farris in Seattle? Has he interviewed? Hired? Any spots left?
