Are any district judges in CA interviewing now, or are they just holding the apps til later in the summer?
08 Grad. Just received an e-mail from Chief Judge Walker in ND Cal. According to his assistant, he has started the interviewing process and will be conducting a few interviews before the onslaught in September.
Stotler in CDCA now has two OSCAR postings that opened on Friday--one for a career position and one for a term position. Says she'll start interviewing in January.

I have not heard of a lot of grads who have been contacted by CA district judges, nor has there been much activity here. I think a lot of judges are waiting.
Haha, I see the ambiguity in my statements. I've been rejected by those three district court judges and I've heard nothing from most of the others. As for interviewing with ND CAL district judges, I am not the one to speak.
I just received a very nice post card from Judge William D. Keller (C.D. Cal.).
"Dear Applicant,
While I appreciate your interest in clerking for me, I have taken Senior Judge status as of October 1999. Therefore, I am not hiring law clerks at this time.
I've heard nothing from N.D. Cal, and a couple of calls to chambers has revealed stressed-out and overwhelmed clerks and judicial assistants. Seems like they're behind the curve and overwhelmed. I haven't heard yet of anyone I know getting a call from any N.D. Cal judges.
Anyone have a better sense than I do about how this usually goes? I was under the impression that if I was going to receive calls it would have started happening by now. Is that true? Should I just calm down? (I know the answer to the latter question, regardless).
I know several CDCA judges last year who didnt call til day 2 or later. Especially since the time for reviewing was so short this year, I wouldnt take it to mean anything if you haven't heard. Generally its only a deathknell for Ct of Apps judges.
Fogel is the only one in the ND that I have heard of making calls today. Illston is currently out of the country and may not call for a couple of weeks.
I get the impression that Snyder called. Called chambers and let them know i would be in the area, they called back and gave me an interview spot. They had definitely been calling others that day b/c the clerk mentioned he had done the "how things will work on interview day" spiel with a lot of people already.
Otero has some interviews scheduled for early October. Real (unsurprisingly, given the latest ABA Journal article) is aggressively trying to fill interview slots.
when bloggers here post their law school rankings, such as "T25," what is the ranking based on? U.S. news and world report's rankings? just wondering. thanks!
Has anyone confirmed the source of the Illston rumor (that she is out of the country)? Her chambers wouldn't say if she has interviewed or hired. Also, do we know when she is expected back?
Burrell started interviewing last week, though I don't know if he's hired.
Per a call to chambers today, Illston has filled all her slots. I'm not sure when she got back, but I guess she moved pretty quickly when she did (or the previous info was inaccurate).

Per OSCAR, Chief Judge Stotler in CDCA is not hiring for 09-10.
Do ANY CA district judges hire early?
08 Grad. Just received an e-mail from Chief Judge Walker in ND Cal. According to his assistant, he has started the interviewing process and will be conducting a few interviews before the onslaught in September.
Class of '08, just got an email from Walker's chambers as well:
"Thank you for submitting your law clerk application materials to Chief Judge Walker. Unfortunately, he will not be offering you an interview."
Aside from Walker, have any of the N.D. Cal. judges started interviewing?
Are any of the CA dist. ct. judges hiring interviewing 3Ls off plan?
Chesney is interviewing. Not sure if she will decide now or in Sept.
When did Chesney make calls?
Ware hired one (USF) for 2009-10.
All quiet on the western front? anything from Illston or Patel in the ND Cal?
Chesney seems to have hired.
Pregerson is done hiring.
Patel and Illston have not started actively reviewing applications, but may look at grad apps before 3Ls with the hiring plan.
Fairbanks has hired 1 for '09-10.
Anyone hear anything from C.D. Cal. judges?
Marshall (C.D. Cal.) hired one HLS alum.
Stotler in CDCA now has two OSCAR postings that opened on Friday--one for a career position and one for a term position. Says she'll start interviewing in January.
Walker has hired one. One position remains.
Breyer is done hiring for '09-'10. I received an email from his chambers yesterday.
Schwarzer has hired at least one already.
Has anyone heard from the LA judges? Gutierrez? Matz? Cooper?
Based on OSCAR, looks like Judge Florence Marie Cooper has hired for '09-10. Any word on other LA judges?

Has anyone heard anything about Wilson? He's supposed to be great.
Received form email via OSCAR from Judge Feess saying that he's just beginning to review apps.
Have any graduates heard from Feess or Matz?
Is Judge Florence-Marie Cooper, in the Central DIstrict, still hiring? Or is she filled up?
Grads - do we think our applications have been discarded at this point, if we haven't heard from judges, or is there still hope?
I have not heard of a lot of grads who have been contacted by CA district judges, nor has there been much activity here. I think a lot of judges are waiting.
I'm a grad and have been contacted by very few district court judges. I would say less than 25% have contacted me and I applied in early July.
Care to share which California district court judges have contacted you?
Off the top of my head, Breyer, Walker, Whyte, and a few of the magistrates as well.
If you're being contacted by Breyer and Walker, I'm curious why you applied to magistrates!
Haha, I see the ambiguity in my statements. I've been rejected by those three district court judges and I've heard nothing from most of the others. As for interviewing with ND CAL district judges, I am not the one to speak.
Judge Phillips has done some interviewing.
Ware still has 1 spot for someone with a tech background
Jones (SDCA) has hired for 2009
I just received a very nice post card from Judge William D. Keller (C.D. Cal.).
"Dear Applicant,
While I appreciate your interest in clerking for me, I have taken Senior Judge status as of October 1999. Therefore, I am not hiring law clerks at this time.
Thank you for your interest and good luck."
I have heard that Judge Guilford has interviewed alums but won't be making final decisions until he's seen the 3L candidates.
Has anyone gotten calls so far this morning from ND Cal. judges?
Does anyone have any information about Sammartino in San Diego?
Still no word from ND? Or is it just me?
I've heard nothing from N.D. Cal, and a couple of calls to chambers has revealed stressed-out and overwhelmed clerks and judicial assistants. Seems like they're behind the curve and overwhelmed. I haven't heard yet of anyone I know getting a call from any N.D. Cal judges.
Anything from CDCA?
Anyone have a better sense than I do about how this usually goes? I was under the impression that if I was going to receive calls it would have started happening by now. Is that true? Should I just calm down? (I know the answer to the latter question, regardless).

heard from carney. i also know that wilson has called.
Any calls for eastern or southern district?
shubb made calls this morning
Gonzales (S.D. Cal.) called this morning.
Moskowitz (S.D. Cal.) has already hired. Miller (S.D. Cal.) will not be going through apps for a while.
Per call to chambers, Wright (C.D. Cal.) is not currently interviewing.
Any new updates on ND Cal judges? As far as I know, no one has heard from any of them, but just wanted to see if anyone else has heard differently...
Fogel is the only one in the ND that I have heard of making calls today. Illston is currently out of the country and may not call for a couple of weeks.
Feess (CD Cal) called 3Ls yesterday.
Do you mind sharing how you got this info about Illston? Did you call chambers?
I get the impression that Snyder called. Called chambers and let them know i would be in the area, they called back and gave me an interview spot. They had definitely been calling others that day b/c the clerk mentioned he had done the "how things will work on interview day" spiel with a lot of people already.
Any ED judges calling today? Sacramento division?
Any news on Matz or Morrow?
Anyone know anything about Gonzalez, Fairbank, or Patel?
Someone yesterday left this comment re: Gonzales
"Gonzales (S.D. Cal.) called this morning."
Btw, thanks to everyone for posting, if my phone ever rings *crossing fingers* I will be sure to reciprocate.
I am with the poster from 12:58. Please keep the posts coming. Thanks to everyone and good luck.
Anyone hear from Gutierrez (C.D. Cal.)?
Received calls from Fairbank and Gonzalez yesterday. Also curious about Patel...
wilson called yesterday
Got a call from King.
Per their chambers, King, Cooper, Moskowitz, and Gonzalez have all choosen who they are going to interview
Per her chambers, Patel "does not currently have any interview slots available."
any word from Karlton?
folks from my school got calls from Morrow, Huff, and Klausner.
otero is out this week and carter is out until the end of the month.
I second the question on Sammartino... information, generally? (not if she's calling)
Karlton has called.
Wilkin? (when did Karlton call?)
Not sure when Karlton called, but per call to chambers, he has finished scheduling.
Burrell, England, or Mendez?
Interview with Sammartino next week. I had left my info because I was already interviewing in SD, and their chambers called me back.
Any info on Judge Phillips or Walker? I'm trying to figure out if they're still interviewing. . . .
Any word on Alsup?
Stotler?
any word on Matz?
I've heard that Stotler generally waits until later in the fall or the winter to start interviewing.
According to my career services, Alsup was pre-screening and interviewing this week and Mendez was calling today.
Any news on Guilford, Ware, Wilken, Gutierrez, Anderson, Benitez, Phillips, Burrell, Sammartino?
an alum from my law school was already contacted by mendez but when i spoke to career services i was told the interview will happen this week.
Stotler will interview in January
Wilkin has scheduled interviews for tomorrow (the 11th).
Otero has some interviews scheduled for early October. Real (unsurprisingly, given the latest ABA Journal article) is aggressively trying to fill interview slots.
Anderson is interviewing.
Any tips for interviews w/ Anderson?
Wilson has started sending out rejection letters. Got one today. Well worded, though.
Does anyone know whether Whyte (ND Cal) or Matz (CD Cal) have interviewed anyone yet, and/or whether they have made any offers?
has anyone started giving offers?
when bloggers here post their law school rankings, such as "T25," what is the ranking based on? U.S. news and world report's rankings? just wondering. thanks!
Per calls to chambers:
Benitez is interviewing and has not hired yet.
Sammartino is conducting first-round interviews.
Phillips is interviewing.
Klausner (C.D. Cal.) made phone calls.
Feess called for interviews
Garcia is not hiring.
Fogel has filled his positions.
king is finito.
wilson is done.
so who in ndca is still available?
As far as NDCA, looks like Illston (currently out of the country), Burrell, and England have not made calls yet based on what I have read.
carney is done.
Any word from Sabraw (San Diego)?
Whelan isn't hiring this year. Hired a 2 year clerk 08-10 (U. San Diego).
England has hired
has sammartino hired yet?
Yes, Sammartino is done.
from where?
Has anyone confirmed the source of the Illston rumor (that she is out of the country)? Her chambers wouldn't say if she has interviewed or hired. Also, do we know when she is expected back?
Burrell started interviewing last week, though I don't know if he's hired.
FYI, Burrell and England are EDCA, not NDCA.
Has Matz interviewed or filled?
How about Whyte (NDCa)? Was the rejection via email or snail?
matz has interviewed, but don't know if he's hired.
King is done hiring.
Feess and klausner have interviews at least through Friday
Phillips has hired one clerk (grad) and had interviews today.
Carter has interviewed and filled at least one, probably both spots.
Is Chief Judge Walker (N.D. Ca.) done with hiring for 09-10? Thanks.
Matz has hired
Walker has been done for a while
so is it over? if we didn't get a called, we're SOL?
Stotler's not hiring until January, so you may still have a shot.
Based on previous comments, Illston is not hiring until a little bit later.
Miller's (SDCA) chambers say he hires late, but last year he hired pretty much in accordance with the plan.
Conti (NDCA) generally hires in October, but also generally only hires all-American type males.
As noted above, Stotler is waiting until January.
Unless anyone has info to the contrary, it doesn't sound like Whyte (NDCA) has started interviews.
Morrow (CDCA) was still calling as of mid-last week.
Ware (N.D. Cal.) hired one Michigan; done for 2009-10
Has Feess offered? Is he still interviewing?
Just got a ding postcard from Sabraw saying he finished hiring.
called Jensen's chambers and he is done.
Anyone talked to Illston's chambers since she returned?
Feess is done.
anyone know if otero has hired?
Per a call to chambers today, Illston has filled all her slots. I'm not sure when she got back, but I guess she moved pretty quickly when she did (or the previous info was inaccurate).
Sabraw is done (postcard). Anyone know where he hired from?
I can confirm that, per call to chambers today, Illston has filled all of her slots.
has anyone heard anything from Shubb?
Miller is done, Burrell is done...
Miller's (SDCA) chambers say he hires late, but last year he hired pretty much in accordance with the plan.
Seems like a trick he uses every year....
is anyone still hiring?
any word about Anderson (CDCA)?
Miller (San Diego) is done per letter from chambers.
Otero is done.
Anyone know where Walker's 09-10 clerks went to school?
One went to Columbia.
All,
Judge Illston had one opening for the 2010-2011 term and that position is now filled. Good luck with your clerkship searches.
