2009-10 Clerkship Season
94 comments:
Manion has two.
Anyone know if Judge Wood interviews grads before September? Rumors last year that she followed the 3L hiring plan for grads also.
anyone know who hires off-plan in the 7th circuit?
Bauer (senior) is off-plan in the 7th.
Are any of the judges who haven't already hired interviewing at this time? I haven't heard squat.
Anyone know is Judge Evans is going to be hiring anyone for '09-10?
8:41 -- I would think so, unless you have some insider info suggesting otherwise.
Confirmed with Judge Evans' chambers today that he is hiring, follows the plan, and wants paper apps.
Does anyone have any indication when 7th Circuit judges may be interviewing alumns?
Some of them read them as they come in...
Posner interviewed someone I know this week.
Posner hired one from Harvard.
Is the Harvard hire a 3L or a grad?
3L
you sure you don't mean grad? did this 3L apply to chambers?
You will quickly come to learn that for many judges who claim to follow the hiring plan that only applies to certain 3Ls. Generally, Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and a few other schools have some kind of inside track through professors, clerkship coordinators, and other things and 3Ls with the right connections will get early interviews and hires regardless. Welcome to the legal profession.
don't know if posner professes to follow the plan
Although he is not a very active recruiter, Posner is open about not following the plan.
the plan is a total smokescreen anyways and just advantages those on the coasts. even judges that do pretend to follow it, break it in spirit with winks and nudges
is posner a feeder judge?
Manion is off the hiring plan.
Ripple is interviewing
Posner's HLS hire is definitely a 3L, not a grad. He is reputedly very sharp!
Judge Ripple's OSCAR posting says he follows the plan, so he must be interviewing only grads.
Posner is reputed to be quite intelligent. A very desirable clerkship, that one.
don't think he really feeds though, does he?
Posner has had 12 former clerks go on to clerk for the Supreme Court of the United States in the last 10 years. Not quite Garland or Kozinski, but 12 is definitely enough to qualify as a feeder judge.
The link below is a good source on feeder judges.

Has anyone heard anything recently? Any hires been made? Particularly by Judge Ripple?
Rumor is Posner hired a Chicago 3L in the last week.
posner is done
Posner: Harvard, Chicago, NYU. All 3Ls.
Anything on Flaum, Cudahy, Bauer or Williams?
Any updates on Judge Ripple?
note that harvard, nyu and chicago all sent in applications before the plan, and those schools that didn't suffered
Just received this from Judge Wood - I sent in my app July 15 (I'm an alum):
Your application for a 2009-10 clerkship position with Judge Diane P. Wood,
United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, has been received.
The review of applications and the interview process will be conducted
in accordance with the Federal Law Clerk Hiring Plan.
Please do not respond to or acknowledge receipt of this email.
Re: 9/7 @ 9:30pm - if your point is that individuals from those schools sent in apps early, that's surely right. If you mean to say that the school generally sends out apps early for its students, that's not true, at least for Chicago. Chicago is quite zealous about plan adherence, at least for apps done through the school.
5:56 - Judge Ripple called today shortly after noon as well as sent out e-mails.
Tinder is calling
10:11 am - I also got that e-mail. I'm now assuming that's a boilerplate "You're not getting a phone call" e-mail.
Of course, I could be (and hopefully am) wrong.
Anyone hear from Cudahy?
5:10--
FYI I got that same email this morning, then a call and email at 12:00 asking for to schedule an interview with Judge Wood.
Wood, Ripple, Easterbrook, and Sykes all contacted 3Ls yesterday. They did so almost exactly at noon.
What days do people have interviews with Ripple? He's apparently not interviewing this week due to cases.
Anyone here from Northern District judges yet? What about magistrates?
What are people's thoughts on staff laaw clerk positions? Anyone know of firms that give bonuses for staff law clerk positions?
any news on williams?
t. evans?
Mayer Brown, Sidley, and Akin Gump give bonuses for staff law clerks. Other firms probably do too.
Has anyone heard from Flaum?
Does anyone know how long Judge Wood usually takes to make a decision after interviewing?
Thanks!
FYI - judges were quite busy this week with two en banc arguments. Don't know if that will slightly delay hearing from them.
Very useful info. Thanks, 4:25.
anyone hear from Judge Hamilton?
Hamilton did interviews yesterday and is interviewing today and maybe Saturday.
Kanne is finished. He has hired a grad from Minnesota, and 3Ls from Catholic U. and Vanderbilt.
Is Ripple still interviewing? Has he hired anyone?
Does anyone know anything about the status of the Chicago circuit judges Bauer, Flaum, Cudahy and Williams?
Cudahy is done. Bauer is not. Don't know about Flaum or Willaims.
Got a rejection email from Tinder.
per his email, judge tinder's position has been filled.
his email states in part: "Over 325 applications were received for the position. . . . Consequently, I regret to inform you that the position has been filled. Best of luck to you."
Ripple is still interviewing. He was unable to start interviews the 11th because of judicial duties.
Any word on Evans or Bauer?
Bauer's OSCAR posting said he wouldn't be hiring until sometime in October.
Any idea on what schools Tinder hired from?
Anyone have thoughts on why a staff law clerk interview is 3 hours long?? Seems lengthy since I'm assuming you don't meet with any judges...
The staff attorney interview is long because it's a decent-sized office (I'd say at least 20 lawyers) and they have you meet with a bunch of different folks, including various supervisors.
Has Ripple made offers?
tinder hired an indiana 3L.
Ripple still has interviews scheduled for next week.
ripple has sent some rejection letters--not sure if he has made offers.
Ripple has made offers. He's all done.
the staff attorney's position interview goes as follows:
1. meet with the lead staff attorney
2. meet with two lesser, but "highly ranked," staff attorneys.
3. meet with two new staff attorneys.
4. Go home and think about how wasteful and unecessary the 3hr process is.
Your information about the staff attorney interviews is incorrect, especially the part about "highly ranked" staff attorneys, whatever that means.
Applicants meet with the Senior Staff Attorney, then with several direct supervisors, then with two current staff attorneys.
Anything on Evans, Bauer or Flaum?
Email from Judge Manion indicating that he only considers those with prior legal experience (private practice, government, or district court clerkships).
Who'd Ripple hire?
Bauer, anybody?
Letter from Flaum. He is done.
Bauer is interviewing
Anything on Williams yet?
Has anyone received a call from Bauer with an offer?
Williams is done.
Anyone heard back on staff law clerk positions? How long did you have to wait?
They are taking a long time to notify about the staff law clerk positions. Does anyone have a source for salary info for these positions?
Staff clerk rejection letters are going out.
Staff clerks are paid the same as elbow clerks. Same pay scale.
Bauer is done
Any dirt on the Williams 09-10 vacancy just posted on OSCAR?
Has anyone heard if Williams is interviewing yet for the 09-10 vacancy?
Re: Williams--I called chambers several days ago, and they suggested that they were interviewing on a rolling basis. (I don't know anything more than that.)
Is it true that Wood only hires on schedule, even grads? I realize this question has been asked before, but never explicitly answered...
Williams seems to have hired; she changed her oscar posting.
For those who don't know, Law Clerk Addict is covering the 2010-11 cycle, and has a notifications section as well as a section devoted to the Seventh Circuit.
