"Elrod hired a Chicago 3L for 2009."

Judge Haynes was confirmed to the 5th Cir. on 4/10.

Judge Haynes has hired two of four clerks.

SMU '08
Duke '03

Unknown said...

Haynes' hires are for the 2008-09 term, right?

Anonymous said...

When did Haynes start interviewing? Is she done interviewing?

Anonymous said...

Yes, Judge Haynes' hires are for the 2008-2009 term (May 2008-August 2009). See is hiring a total of 4 clerks and so far as I know is still accepting applications (although probably not for much longer b/c she needs clerks fast). She interviewed two people last week and hired them both.

Anonymous said...

Haynes is still accepting applications for the 08-09 term. But rumor has it she has been asking for graduates with 1-4 years experience.

Anonymous said...

Is Haynes looking for people who can start immediately (as in those already living in Dallas) or is she looking at a more flexible date (i.e., after Memorial Day or the first week of June)?

Anonymous said...

From what I understand, she wants clerks to start in the next three weeks or so. The two she's already hired and starting work next week.

Anonymous said...

I understand Elrod has hired an HLS alum for 2009. I believe that means she has two slots left for that year.

Anonymous said...

Has Haynes done anymore hiring?

Anonymous said...

Actually, Judge Haynes is taking her time with the last two hires. She probably will hire someone in the next month or so, but that leaves plenty of time to get an application in. I don't know much about her hiring criteria other than she likes good grades (at least top 10%).

One of Judge Haynes hires for 2008-2009 is a May 2008 Southern Methodist University grad.

Anonymous said...

I've heard that Judge Haynes has finished hiring for the 2008 term. One of the hires was Harvard '01.

Anonymous said...

I can confirm. Judge Haynes is done hiring for the 08 term.

Anonymous said...

Haynes hires are: SMU '08, Duke '03, Harvard '01, and Texas '06. It looks like future applicants should have at least 2 years experience in order to have any chance.

Anonymous said...

word is that Southwick hired an '09 Miss. Coll. for 2009-10

Anonymous said...

Any word on Jerry Smith? I know he is off plan-- has he begun interviews yet?

Anonymous said...

Jerry Smith has already hired someone from Georgetown so I assume he has started interviewing. His posting on OSCAR also states that applicants should send in applications ASAP.

Anonymous said...

Benavides hired an 08.

Anonymous said...

Benavides hired an 09 and is finished hiring for the 2009 Term.

Anonymous said...

Clement has hired a third UVA grad.

Anonymous said...

Clement's fourth is a HLS grad.

Anonymous said...

Was the Georgetown hire for Judge Smith for 2009-10, or 2008-09?

Anonymous said...

Has anyone heard from Judge Smith one way or the other re 2009-2010?

Anonymous said...

Judge Benavides has finished hiring for the 2009-10 Term. He will accept applications from 3Ls in the fall for 2010-11.

-Chambers of Judge Benavides

Unknown said...

Confirmed with Benavides' chambers that he has finished hiring for 09.

Anonymous said...

Judge Smith's OSCAR posting is hilarious.

"I don't follow any "hiring plan." The so-called "plan" is unofficial and not binding on any judge, student, or school. More and more judges from the Fifth Cir. & other circuits are not following the "plan" this year. Apply ASAP. E-mail apps. encouraged."

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know who Judge Smith means by other 5th Circuit judges hiring off the plan?

Anonymous said...

Southwick and Benevides are likely off the plan since they've both hired rising 3Ls already.

Anonymous said...

Got an email from Smith's chambers today confirming receipt of my application and reiterating his intention to hire off-plan. I sent my app by paper about a month ago, so I don't know if he's behind on paper apps (I know he prefers email).

Anonymous said...

got the same email from Judge Smith's chambers.

Also, I called Southwick's chambers. Judge Southwick follows the plan.

Anonymous said...

Rumor has it that Garza hired a Northwestern grad ('08) for 2009-2010.

Anonymous said...

Judge Garza has hired a Northwestern graduate and a Georgetown graduate for 2009-10. He has one spot remaining, likely for a student.

Anonymous said...

So was that email from Judge Smith just a form letter he sent to everyone? I thought he was done hiring, but I guess he might have more spots.

Anonymous said...

Judge Smith currently has four openings for '09-'10 and has begun interviews. He is still welcoming applications. He is mailing regret letters to those who are no longer under consideratrion.

Anonymous said...

What is Judge Elrod's situation (a) re: the plan and (b) for 2009 generally?

Anonymous said...

I thought that Elrod was not hiring for 2009, but am curious if this is a mistake on OSCAR! Anyone?

Anonymous said...

I received a Judge Smith regret letter today.

Anonymous said...

Elrod does not have an official policy regarding the Plan because she has only ever hired grads. I think she has long been done for 2009-2010 since she has already hired 3 grads.

Anonymous said...

To: July 14, 2008 7:27 PM (person who received a Judge Smith regret letter today)

Did you also receive an email from Judge Smith last week confirming receipt of application and asking for updates?

Anonymous said...

I think Smith must be done because I also received a regret today. I'm guessing he's sending out letters to all his leftover applicants.

Anonymous said...

So what is going on with that July 11 post re: Smith hiring. That made it sound like the process was still going on.

Anonymous said...

Yes, I am also confused about Smith hiring. Did those who received regret letters also receive the email sent out last week asking for application updates and explaining the process? It seems like the email was sent the same day as the regret letter.

Anonymous said...

Just a guess, but I'm assuming Smith went through all applications and sorted them into piles of "No" (people who got the letter) and "Maybe" (people who got the email asking for more info). My understanding is that he's still hiring.

Anonymous said...

I definitely got the "not good enough" Smith NO! letter.

Might as well have clerked for SCOTUS to clerk for Smith

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know if Southwick, Jolly, or Barksdale are reviewing grad applications now, or are they waiting until September?

Anonymous said...

Smith has hired a Michigan 3L.

Anonymous said...

Really? Who?

Anonymous said...

Has anyone heard anything from any of the Mississippi judges?

Anonymous said...

Graduates who are interested in applying to Judge Haynes for the 2009-2010 term should get their applications in ASAP!

Anonymous said...

elrod is supposedly hiring one more this year. also supposedly she has interviewed all potential candidates for that spot.

Anonymous said...

Elrod hired another Chicago grad.

Anonymous said...

Elrod hired another Chicago grad.

Anonymous said...

Does Haynes confirm receipt of applications? I submitted my application for the 2009-2010 term a while back now.

Anonymous said...

Smith is still interviewing.

Anonymous said...

I heard that Prado has already hired at least two clerks. Not sure from where. My understanding is they're grads.

Anonymous said...

I know that one of Prado's hires is Penn alum.

Anonymous said...

Has anyone heard from Southwick, Barksdale, or Jolly in Mississippi?

Anonymous said...

Barksdale Miss Coll 3L

Anonymous said...

Rumor is Smith recently hired a Chicago 3L

Anonymous said...

Can confirm Barksdale hired MC 3L, as well as Texas 3L and UVA 3L.

Southwick has NOT hired anyone for 09-10 yet, but has interviewed local applicants. He is waiting to make offers until after the hiring plan deadline.

No word on Jolly.

Anonymous said...

Has Southwick interviewed 3Ls too, or just graduates? Is he planning to interview any more applicants?

Anonymous said...

I'm not sure if Haynes confirms receipt of applications - I was wondering the same thing. Does anyone have any information on this?

Anonymous said...

Anyone heard from Elrod about the 2010-2011 openings?

Anonymous said...

Garwood = Baylor 3L, DeMoss = Baylor Grad, District Court Clerk.

Anyone hear from the 5th yet?

Anonymous said...

I haven't heard anything from Houston 5th Cir. judges yet. Also applied to Elrod for 2010-2011 and don't know what's going on there.

Anonymous said...

E. Jones has been calling.

Anonymous said...

Is E. Jones done calling at this point? When did she start?

Anonymous said...

Elrod info? King info?

Anonymous said...

I heard King hired someone off the plan a few weeks ago.

Anonymous said...

Has anyone heard anything on Haynes?

Anonymous said...

1:09 When did you hear that Sutton was calling?

Anonymous said...

E. Jones, Jolly, and Prado all called 3Ls yesterday. All did so right after noon.

Anonymous said...

Do you know if Jolly called any graduates?

Anonymous said...

Is there any news on Judge Elrod?

Anonymous said...

Any ideas if King will be hiring more clerks? Any news on Benavides or Haynes?

Anonymous said...

Any news on Southwick?

Anonymous said...

Anyone heard from Dennis or Stewart?

Anonymous said...

Judge Southwick hired a Texas Law grad today. The hire is currently doing a district court clerkship.

Anonymous said...

Garza?

Anonymous said...

Owen hired from Texas.

Anonymous said...

Lovely email from Southwick today saying he has "decided on some other individuals." No idea if that means interview slots are full or if positions are actually filled.

Anonymous said...

Southwick has finished hiring. 1 Miss. Coll. 3L, one TX grad, and two others, one of whom is a grad and one of whom is a 3L.

Anonymous said...

Jolly is done.

Anonymous said...

Where are the last two Southwick hires from?

Anonymous said...

how do you know about the Miss. Coll. 3L

Anonymous said...

Jones hired a LSU 3L.

Unknown said...

demoss and reavley have hired.

Anonymous said...

Did Southwick hire a second 3L from Mississippi College or is this the one he hired several weeks ago?

Where else did he hire from besides Texas and Mississippi College?

Anonymous said...

Got an e-mail from Jolly saying his spots are filled.

Anonymous said...

Is Smith totally done for 2009-2010? Also, what about Elrod for 2010-2011?

Anonymous said...

Owen hired a Stanford 3L

Anonymous said...

Garza hired a Harvard 3L for his last spot.

Anonymous said...

Any news on Higginbotham?

Anonymous said...

Who on the Fifth Circuit still hasn't hired now that the on-plan apps are out?

Anonymous said...

Smith reportedly finished last week. He hired four 3L's, all interviewed and given offers before the plan dates. He never follows the voluntary plan.

Anonymous said...

I applied to Smith for next year. Got a terse rejection letter for THIS year. Smith does not seem to read applications.

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know for sure if Southwick is done? If so, where else did he hire from besides Texas and Mississippi College?

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know where Smith's hires are from? I know he took a Chicago 3L and a Michigan 3L. The other two?

Anonymous said...

Any word on Dennis or Stewart?

Anonymous said...

Anyone heard from Elrod or Benavides?

Anonymous said...

Benavides finished pre-plan

Anonymous said...

Owen's listing on OSCAR says she's done, as does Southwick's.

Anonymous said...

The last two Southwick hires were both Ole Miss 3Ls.

Anonymous said...

any word at all on Stewart?

Anonymous said...

Has anyone heard from Judge Dennis?

Anonymous said...

Dennis has scheduled interviews.

Anonymous said...

Anything from Haynes?

Anonymous said...

Elrod is finished.

Anonymous said...

do you mean that Elrod is finished for 2010-2011?? she's been finished for 2009-2010 for a while now...

Anonymous said...

I received an e-mail yesterday from Judge Elrod's chambers saying she recently finished hiring for 09-10.

Anonymous said...

I see Dennis has reopened his oscar listing for the 09-11 term. Anybody know how many spots are left?

Anonymous said...

Stewart is done.

Anonymous said...

How do you know Stewart is done?

Anonymous said...

2:58, I called Stewart's chambers and asked if he had finished hiring clerks for the next year. They said he was "finished with his process."

Anonymous said...

Has anyone heard if Haynes is finished hiring?

Anonymous said...

I received an e-mail from Judge Hayne saying she is done hiring.

Anonymous said...

King is also done hiring.

Anonymous said...

Elrod's 2009-10 hires: 2 Harvard, 1 Chicago, 1 Washington & Lee. She is now accepting applications for 2010-11.
