Anyone have any good input to share for a current clerk looking to practice law in florida?

I am a current clerk in FL and am exploring the same. What interests do you have, and are you clerking down here too?

No, I'm actually beginning to clerk for the sixth circuit court of appeals out of KY, but I recently took the FL bar. I have not decided where I'd like to move yet, but may be looking to move back to Jacksonville or Tampa. I am not completely sure which type of law I'd like to practice, as I'm hoping I'll figure that out during the upcoming year.

Congratulations on the bar. I am a fairly new resident of FL myself (2006), but I was in private practice down here for a short time before clerking, so I know a bit about the lay of the land.

Hi - as far as federal clerkship bonuses go at those law firms that do pay out, what difference, if any, can one find in the bonus for a district court clerk as opposed to a magistrate clerk?

I was curious if anyone wanted to start a dialogue about the possible post-work career choices oher than the more obvious ones (law firm to get that bonus, DOJ, US Attorney). Other than those, I was curious what else might be out there. Seems like in-house would be too soon, but maybe not at a junior level. Obviously some will want to teach, but what else? State government jobs? Federal jobs besides DOJ?

Also, what opportunities might there be for circuit clerks not open to district clerks and vise versu?

Good luck to all.

I would be interested in a work/life balance dialogue. I'm hoping clerks have more leverage to negotiate a reduced hours firm job (but still on partnership track, and still getting good assignments), but maybe that's a fantasy. I don't want to be stuck without opportunity for advancement if I went in-house (I will be a 4th year when I finish clerking), but it might be the best thing re schedule. I liked private practice before clerking, but I won't do the hours anymore.

7:53, I would be very interested in such a dialogue. Legislative attorney, and law librarian come to mind as potential options. Non-profit work, fellowships, human resources attorney (not the same as in-house) with, e.g., a hospital), and contract work are other possibilities I have considered.

Anyone interested in public interest work, fellowships, or law school administrative positions should check out pslawnet.org for postings. Idealist.org is also a good resource.

When should a clerk serving for the September '09-August '10 term apply for an associate position in a law firm?

I did a year long clerkship at a state appellate court and accepted a position with the state attorney general afterwards in my rural area representing the dept of public aid. The salary is okay for the area, and the health benefits are awesome. I work 8:30 to 4:30 with plenty of days off and vacation. The only bummer is that I drive a ton, like 3,000 miles per month.

ATL has a report out this morning regarding signs that the BigLaw upheaval may be affecting current clerks' prospects of returning to their prior practice.
